Float valves can be put in several different locations of the drill string or BHA. They are simply a check valve, allowing drilling fluid (mud) to be pumped through the drill string out into open hole, (well bore) while not allowing the fluid to re-enter the drill string. The float goes in with the spring side towards the bit. So when the plunger is depressed flow travels down the string,but can't return back up.
